How We Do It
Steering
Cores We have over 7,000 sq. feet of cores stored in our facility. All cores are computer inventoried to give you quick information of units in our stock. We receive units from all over the United States daily. [Back to Top] Tear Downs All units are completely torn down and inspected. The housings, shafts, bearings, seals and dust boots are evaluated and determined what parts need replaced and what can be remanufactured. [Back to Top] Cleaning Our pressure-cleaning machine has just been updated. It is designed with high pressure and detergent specifically for cleaning steering units. [Back to Top] Remanufacturing Each unit is individually rebuilt from start to finish by a specialized mechanic for that type of unit. Inspection of the housing, shafts, bearings, seals and dust boots are checked again and replaced with our complete inventory of cores that are already torn down and cleaned to give the fastest remanufacturing time. [Back to Top] Seals & Bearings We have a complete inventory of seals, bearings, boots and dust seals for all years, makes and models used only for our remanufacturing. We buy in bulk and this helps keep our prices down. Our computerized purchasing department has the most comprehensive steering parts ordering system. [Back to Top] Chroming Our industrial hard chrome plating system is designed to repair seal surfaces on shafts that are damaged beyond repair using conventional methods. We do not spray weld our shafts as this process damages the heat treatment properties of the metal. [Back to Top] Machine Shop Our in-house machine shop has the capacity to remanufacture replacement parts, obsolete parts, and tools for our rebuilders and anything needed to repair your steering unit. Our machines consist of lathes, OD-ID and surface grinders, mills, thread grinder, CNC lathes, precision honing and gear manufacturing. Our machinists are highly skilled with years of experience. [Back to Top] Testing Our testing equipment is unmatched in the industry. Our machinists engineered equipment specifically to evaluate the performance of steering units hot for binding and catching. Each unit is also checked internally and externally for leaks, pressure and flow. Additionally, we check turns from end to end and the valves to ensure that the steering is even on both the right and left turns. We know how every steering unit performs before it is installed on your vehicle. [Back to Top] Inventory Our extensive computerized inventory helps get your vehicle back on the road. We stock over 500 different power and manual steering gears, pumps, rack & pinions, flow control valves and power cylinders for all years, makes and models for cars and trucks, domestic and imported. [Back to Top] Flushing and Service Tags Each unit is delivered with a flushing and service guide to help with installation and answer your questions from flushing your system to adjusting the relief valves. [Back to Top] Service Department An integral part of Steer & Gear's services is the installation and repair of any vehicle's steering unit from a car to a heavy-duty truck.
